General nature policy

The Uniek Curaçao Foundation is not a nature organization par excellence (see also the other sectors). Nature is important for society and should prevent harmful erosion, especially in Curaçao. For these reasons, among other things, nature must be protected against decay, abuse, harmful exploitation, and pollution.

The foundation states that people are central to nature conservation, not nature itself. Nature is often neglected by nonchalance and indifference. Not only nature lovers, but the population as a whole, need nature to recreate well and qualitatively. Nature plays a major role in a healthier life.

It is important that a nature reserve is facilitated with, for example, benches on the walking routes, signposts, rest areas with picnic tables, and playgrounds for children in park areas. These facilities encourage people to spend more time in the area and generates social control.

What is essential is that natural areas and beaches are free and accessible 24/7.

This is an important aspect to prevent a dichotomy among the population whereby only the financially able can walk or stay everywhere, and the less wealthy are banned from parks and nature (walking areas). The organizations that close off nature reserves and charge admission do not work sustainably and are not public-friendly.

We feel that a Curaçaoan should not have to pay for every piece of Curaçao to stay there. It also deprives wealthy people of their sense of freedom.

The same goes for visitors to the island. In this case too, freedom is limited by continually asking for entrance fees.

Nature provides the visitor with a feeling of freedom!
